FASCIA GAPS TO BRIGHT STRIP FRONT & REAR (REPAIR METHODS)

******************************************************************* REVISION 12/16/93

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO INCLUDE THE 1994 MODEL YEAR AND TO UPDATE PART NUMBER INFORMATION.

PREVIOUS DIVISIONAL PUBLICATION NUMBERS WERE:

BUICK 93-10-13 GM OF CANADA 93-10-144 *******************************************************************

SUBJECT: FASCIA GAPS TO BRIGHT STRIP - FRONT AND REAR (REPAIR METHODS)

MODELS: 1992-94 BUICK LESABRE

SOME OWNERS MAY EXPERIENCE ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

(A) A GAP BETWEEN THE BRIGHT BAR AND THE LOWER FASCIA (B) THE OUTER MOLDING ON THE SIDE OF THE FASCIA NOT BEING ALIGNED WITH THE BRIGHT STRIP ON THE IMPACT BAR (C) BULGE IN THE SIDE OF THE FASCIA BELOW THE OUTER MOLDING (SEE FIGURE 1)

THESE CONDITIONS, IF PRESENT ON EITHER FRONT OR REAR FASCIA, MAY BE CORRECTED USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

THE FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN ORDER.

1. ASSURE THE NUT HOLDING THE OUTER MOLDING AT THE REAR IS TIGHT AND THE FRONT CLIP IS PROPERLY LOCATED BEHIND THE IMPACT BAR. (SEE FIGURE 2) SOME MOVEMENT IN THIS MOLDING IS NORMAL.

2. ASSURE THE FASCIA IS EVEN ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE BY MEASURING THE GAP BETWEEN THE TURN SIGNAL AND THE FASCIA (SEE PAGE 1-2-14 IN THE 1993 SERVICE MANUAL). TO ADJUST THE HEIGHT OF THE FASCIA, LOOSEN THE FOUR (4) IMPACT BAR ATTACHING NUTS (SEE FIGURE 3) ON EACH SIDE AND ADJUST AS NECESSARY. OBSERVE THE CHANGES IN THE FASCIA TO BRIGHT BAR GAP AS THE FASCIA IS MOVED. IN SOME CASES, THE GAP OR BULGE WILL BE CORRECTED BY CHANGING THE HEIGHT. ASSURE THE FASCIA IS CENTERED (SEE STEP 3 BELOW) PRIOR TO RE-TIGHTENING THE IMPACT BAR ATTACHING NUTS. ALSO, ASSURE THE BRIGHT BAR IS PROPERLY ALIGNED TO THE OUTER MOLDING ON THE SIDE OF THE FASCIA. (SEE FIGURE 1)

3. ASSURE THE FASCIA IS CENTERED RIGHT TO LEFT BY CHECKING IN THE FOLLOWING TWO AREAS:

A. COMPARE THE AMOUNT OF FASCIA EXPOSED AT THE CORNERING LAMP ON THE RIGHT SIDE COMPARED TO THE LEFT SIDE TO HELP DETERMINE IF THE FASCIA IS CENTERED (SEE FIGURE 4).

B. COMPARE THE GAP BETWEEN THE FASCIA AND THE GRILLE SIDE TO SIDE IN THE AREAS SHOWN IN FIGURE 4.

IF ADJUSTMENT IS NECESSARY, LOOSEN THE FOUR (4) IMPACT BAR ATTACHING NUTS (SEE FIGURE 3) AND CENTER THE FASCIA ASSEMBLY AS NECESSARY. OBSERVE THE FASCIA TO BRIGHT BAR GAP AS THE FASCIA ASSEMBLY IS CENTERED. AS IN SOME CASES, THE GAP OR BULGE WILL BE CORRECTED BY CENTERING THE ASSEMBLY.

4. IF STEPS 1, 2, AND 3 ARE CORRECT AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS STILL EXISTS, SHIMMING WILL BE REQUIRED.

A. FASCIA STILL GAPS TO THE BRIGHT BAR AT THE CORNERS.

B. IMPACT BAR DOES NOT ALIGN PROPERLY TO THE OUTER MOLDING ON THE SIDE OF THE FASCIA. THERE SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 3 MM OF SPACE BETWEEN THE END OF THE OUTER MOLDING AND THE IMPACT BAR.

C. FASCIA BULGES OUT ON THE SIDE BELOW THE OUTER MOLDING.

SHIMS ARE AVAILABLE IN 1 1/2 MM THICKNESS, P/N 25531874. THESE SHIMS CAN BE USED ON EITHER THE FRONT OR REAR FASCIA ASSEMBLY.((

SHIM THE FASCIA ASSEMBLY AS FOLLOWS:

A. LOOSEN THE IMPACT BAR ATTACHING NUTS AND OBSERVE THE CHANGES TO THE GAP, BULGE OR OUTER MOLDING ALIGNMENT.

B. PRY OUTWARD ON THE IMPACT BAR AND OBSERVE ANY CHANGE IN THE CONDITIONS. PRYING OUTWARD ON THE IMPACT BAR AT THE BOTTOM (BETWEEN THE LOWER TWO ATTACHING NUTS) WILL TIP THE FASCIA ASSEMBLY AND CORRECT SOME CONDITIONS. IN OTHER CASES, THE TOP OF THE IMPACT BAR MUST MOVE OUT TO CORRECT THE CONDITION. IN STILL OTHER CASES, THE ENTIRE IMPACT BAR MAY NEED TO BE MOVED OUTWARD.

C. AFTER DETERMINING WHICH WAY THE IMPACT BAR MUST BE MOVED (TIPPED DOWN, TIPPED UP OR THE ENTIRE BAR MOVED OUTWARD) NOTE THE DISTANCE THE IMPACT BAR MUST BE MOVED TO DETERMINE THE SHIM LOCATION AND THICKNESS REQUIRED.

D. INSTALL THE SHIMS IN THE LOCATIONS WHERE THE PRYING WAS MOST EFFECTIVE. TO TIP THE FASCIA, INSTALL SHIMS ON EITHER THE TOP TWO STUDS OR THE LOWER TWO STUDS ONLY. TO MOVE THE ENTIRE FASCIA OUTWARD, SHIM AT ALL FOUR STUDS.

AFTER ANY ADJUSTMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE, ASSURE THE FASCIA IS CENTERED AND THE PROPER HEIGHT. ASSURE THAT THE BRIGHT STRIP IN THE IMPACT BAR IS PROPERLY ALIGNED WITH THE FASCIA OUTER MOLDING.

PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM GMSPO.
