IMPROPERLY MOLDED SOLENOID (SOL. 'A', 'B' AND TCC/VCC)

********************************************************************* TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS: SUBJECT: HYDRA-MATIC 4T60E (M13) IMPROPERLY MOLDED SOLENOID (SOLENOID "A," "B" AND/OR "TCC/VCC")

TRANSAXLE MODELS: VEHICLE APPLICATIONS: ALL 1992 C, E, H, K, W - CAR 1992 U - VAN _____________________________________________________________________

CONDITION: (FIGURE 1) SOME VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HYDRA-MATIC 4T60E (RPO M13) TRANS- AXLE BUILT BETWEEN AUGUST 14, 1991 (JULIAN DATE 226) AND SEPTEMBER 16, 1991 (JULIAN DATE 259), MAY EXHIBIT ERRATIC SHIFTS. DEPENDING ON THE DEGREE OF SOLENOID WALK-OUT, THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS MAY EXIST:

SOLENOID CONDITION "A" NO DRIVE/SLIPS IN DRIVE "B" 4TH GEAR START "TCC/VCC" NO DRIVE/SLIPS IN DRIVE

CAUSE: (FIGURE 2) SOME SOLENOIDS MAY HAVE THE MOLDED PLASTIC HOUSING UPSIDE DOWN. THIS CAN AFFECT THE HOLDING ABILITY OF THE SPRING RETAINER CLIP (314) TO THE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY (315) AND ALLOW THE SPRING RETAINER CLIP TO BECOME UNCLIPPED FROM THE SOLENOID HOUSING. IF THE SPRING RETAINER CLIP SHOULD BECOME UNCLIPPED, THE SHIFT SOLENOID MAY SEPARATE FROM THE CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (301), AND CAUSE THE SOLENOID TO BECOME INEFFECTIVE.

NOTE: CUSTOMERS WHO DRIVE ON ROUGH SURFACED ROADS OR AFTER HITTING A BUMP MAY BE MORE INCLINED TO KNOCK THE SPRING RETAINER CLIP LOOSE FROM AN AFFECTED SOLENOID.

CORRECTION:

WHEN SERVICING ANY TRANSAXLE WHERE THE SHIFT SOLENOID IS NOT SECURED TO THE CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO CHECK THE SOLENOID FOR THE ABOVE MENTIONED CONDITION BEFORE REASSEMBLING. IF THE SOLENOID IS IMPROPERLY MOLDED, IT MUST BE REPLACED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

IF THE TRANSAXLE CONTAINS AN IMPROPERLY MOLDED SHIFT SOLENOID ASSEMBLY, REPLACE THE SOLENOID WITH THE PART LISTED UNDER "SERVICE PARTS INFORMATION."

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
