Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 29800 Cut-Off Tool
- Service the front pipe and the catalytic converter as a single
unit.
- Remove the oxygen sensor. Refer to
Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement
in Engine Controls.
- Support the converter.
- Cut the intermediate exhaust pipes (1) at the converter with a J 29800
. Cut the pipe as close to the weld as
possible.
- Remove the front pipe bolts at the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the converter.
- Remove the inlet/outlet portions that remain from the intermediate
pipe/resonator.
Installation Procedure
- Install the converter.
- If a converter and an adjacent pipe are replaced, install a sleeve to prevent
an exhaust leak.
- Position the intermediate pipe/resonator for proper clearance
to the underbody.
- Install the U bolt type clamps.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the front pipe attaching bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install the oxygen sensor. Refer to
Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement
in Engine Controls.
