Water Pump Replacement L36

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 172647  Size: SH
  5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump.
  7. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 46178  Size: SH
  1. Using a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine.

  2. Object Number: 46181  Size: SH
  3. Install the water pump bolts.
  4. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolts (2) to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Install the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement .
  7. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  10. Check for coolant leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  2. Remove the A/C compressor splash shield.
  3. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  4. Remove the supercharger drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement .
  5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement .
  6. Remove the coil pack. Position the coil pack out of the way.
  7. Remove the supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  8. Attach the engine support fixture to the engine.
  9. Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  10. Remove the power steering pump.
  11. Remove the engine mount bracket.
  12. Remove the idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .
  13. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.

  15. Remove the water pump.
  16. Clean all of the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 46178  Size: SH
  1. Using a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine.

  2. Object Number: 46181  Size: SH
  3. Install the water pump bolts.
  4. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolts (2) to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  6. Install the idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .
  7. Install the engine mount bracket.
  8. Install the power steering pump.
  9. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  10. Remove the engine support fixture.
  11. Install the supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  12. Install the coil pack. Position the coil pack out of the way.
  13. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement .
  14. Install the supercharger drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement .
  15. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling
  16. Install the A/C compressor splash shield.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18. Check for coolant leaks.
