Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 41545

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Set the gear selector to NEUTRAL (N).

  4. Remove the electrical connectors.

  5. Object Number: 97291  Size: SH
  6. Remove the linkage retaining nut.

  7. Object Number: 97294  Size: SH
  8. Remove the cable.

  9. Object Number: 97295  Size: SH
  10. Remove the lever.

  11. Object Number: 97299  Size: SH
  12. Remove the park/neutral position switch.

Installation Procedure

  1. Verify that the transaxle shaft is still in the NEUTRAL position. If it has been moved, rotate the shaft clockwise from PARK through REVERSE into NEUTRAL. Do not damage the shaft flats, corners, or threads.
  2. Verify that the new replacement park/neutral position switches are already pinned in the NEUTRAL position.
  3. When installing a park/neutral position switch with a sheared pin, insert the J 41545 into the two slots on the switch in the area of the transaxle shaft.
  4. Rotate the tool until the rear leg on the tool falls into the slot on the switch near the hose.
  5. Verify that the tool is properly seated in all three slots.
  6. Remove the tool.
  7. Check for a cracked carrier if the pin is sheared or if installing the original switch.
  8. Install the park/neutral position switch using the following procedure:
  9. • Align the flats in the park/neutral position switch with the transaxle manual shaft flats.
    • Press the park/neutral position switch onto the shaft and fully seat it against the transaxle.
  10. Install the bolts.
  11. Verify that the alignment of the switch with the alignment tool before tightening the bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  13. Remove the alignment tool.

  15. Install the cable.

  17. Install the lever.

  18. Object Number: 97291  Size: SH
  19. Install the linkage retaining nut.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).


    Object Number: 97289  Size: SH
  21. Install the electrical connectors.
  22. Notice: Check the shifter for normal freedom of movement and proper shift control cable adjustment. Make sure that the vehicle has the correct shift control cable bracket and shift lever. The bracket and lever will be marked as follows:

       • The Bonneville lever with the floor shift: 2H D55
       • The Eighty Eight lever with the floor shift: 3H D55
       • The Bonneville and Eighty Eight bracket with the floor shift: 2H D55 and 3H D55
       • Bonneville, Eighty Eight, LeSabre, Ninety Eight, and Park Avenue bracket and lever with column shift: C/H column

    Important: 

       • Set the parking brake.
       • After park/neutral position switch installation, verify that the engine starts only in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL(N). If the engine starts in any other position, readjust the park/neutral position switch.
