REAR COMPARTMENT WATERLEAK WHEN LID IS RAISED

SUBJECT: REAR COMPARTMENT WATERLEAK WHEN LID IS RAISED (APPLY SEALS TO BACK-UP LAMP ASSEMBLY)

MODELS: 1997 BUICK LESABRE BUILT FROM VIN BREAKPOINTS VH400001 TO VH468325

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON WATER INTRUSION IN THE REAR COMPARTMENT WHEN THE REAR COMPARTMENT LID IS RAISED. WATER MAY GATHER BEHIND THE BACK-UP LAMP ASSEMBLY AND BECOME TRAPPED.

CAUSE:

THE BACK-UP LAMP ASSEMBLY ALLOWS TOO MUCH WATER TO GATHER BEHIND IT DUE TO INSUFFICIENT SEALING.

CORRECTION:

CONDITION MAY BE CORRECTED BY APPLYING FOAM SEALS TO BACK-UP LAMP ASSEMBLY.

PROCEDURE:

1. REMOVE THE BACK-UP LAMP ASSEMBLY. REFER TO SECTION 8B OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REMOVE EXISTING LAMP SEAL FROM THE BACK-UP LAMP END CAPS. SEE FIGURE 1.

3. THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE BACKSIDE OF THE BACK-UP LAMP END CAPS USING A MILD SOAP AND WATER. SEE FIGURE 2.

4. CUT A 225 MM (9 INCH) LENGTH OF 3M PART #06370 FOAM TAPE, OR EQUIVALENT.

5. STARTING AT THE BOTTOM SURFACE OF THE END CAP, APPLY FOAM TAPE TO THE INNER EDGE OF THE END CAP AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 3.

IMPORTANT: ONCE APPLIED, THE FOAM TAPE WILL APPEAR ON THE BACK-UP LAMP AT THE EDGE OF THE REAR COMPARTMENT LID. FOR APPEARANCE PURPOSES, APPLY THE FOAM TAPE AS STRAIGHT AS POSSIBLE.

6. ON THE TOP EDGE OF THE END CAP, VERIFY THAT THE FOAM TAPE IS APPROXIMATELY 30 MM FROM THE INBOARD EDGE OF THE CHROME SURFACE. SEE FIGURE 4.

7. INSTALL THE BACK-UP LAMP ASSEMBLY TO THE VEHICLE.
