INTERMITTENT STALL AT IDLE OR O DECEL OR HARD START

SUBJECT: INTERMITTENT STALL AT IDLE OR ON DECEL OR HARD START HOT (FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR LEAKING)

MODELS: 1997 BUICK LESABRE WITH 3.8L ENGINE (VIN K - RPO L36)

CONDITION:

INTERMITTENT STALL AT IDLE, ON DECEL, OR WHEN PLACED IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE MAY EXHIBIT SLIGHTLY HIGH IDLE SPEED AFTER STALL, OR NEAR STALL. AN EXTENDED CRANK TIME MAY ALSO BE NOTED ON HOT SOAK AND RESTART.

CAUSE:

FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR DIAPHRAGM LEAKING FUEL INTO THE ENGINE THROUGH THE VACUUM LINE. CHECK FOR LIQUID FUEL AT THE TRANSMISSION VACUUM MODULATOR BY REMOVING ITS VACUUM LINE. IT IS ON THE SAME VACUUM LINE AS THE REGULATOR AND IS LOWER THAN THE VACUUM SOURCE, SO LIQUID MAY COLLECT THERE. ALSO IF THE VACUUM LINE IS REMOVED FROM THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR WITH THE ENGINE IDLING IT MAY TAKE UP TO THREE MINUTES TO SEE FUEL COME OUT THE REGULATOR.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR.
