When armed, the CTD system is designed to deter vehicle theft. The system deters theft by pulsing the horns and exterior lights when the system detects an unauthorized vehicle entry. An unauthorized entry may be any one of the following cases:

    • Forced entry into the rear compartment
    • When any door is opened

The remote function actuator (RFA) module controls all alarm functions. When the RFA detects an unauthorized entry, the RFA applies ground to the horn relay and the lamp control module (LCM) once per second. Ground is applied for approximately three minutes, or until the RFA receives a valid input to disarm. The RFA has the following five basic modes:

    • Disarmed mode. The CTD is disarmed until the RFA detects all of the following conditions:
       - The ignition switch is turned to the lock position.
       - Any door is open
       - The doors are locked by either the power door lock switch or the keyless entry transmitter (Key fob). If all of the doors are closed and the key fob is used to lock the doors, the RFA enters the delayed mode.
    • Standby mode. The CTD is in standby when the RFA detects the above conditions. The RFA grounds CKT 264 (DK GRN) once per second. This action flashes the SECURITY indicator. When the RFA detects that all doors are closed, the system enters delayed mode.
    • Delayed mode. The CTD system is in delay mode for 30 seconds. The RFA grounds CKT 264 (DK GRN) continuously. This action illuminates the SECURITY indicator. After 30 seconds, the system enters armed mode.
    • Armed mode. When the CTD system is armed, the system monitors all inputs for an unauthorized forced entry. The RFA stops grounding CKT 264 (DK GRN). This action turns the SECURITY indicator off. If the RFA detects a forced entry, the system enters alarm mode.
    • Alarm mode. The CTD system detects a forced entry while in armed mode. The RFA grounds the horn relay (CKT 28, BLK) and the exterior lights control enable input (CKT 624, BLK/WHT) to the LCM. The RFA grounds once per second for approximately three minutes, or until the RFA receives a valid input to disarm. After three minutes, the CTD returns to the armed mode.

If the RFA receives a door unlock request during the arming sequence, the CTD system does not enter the armed mode. The RFA stops grounding CKT 264 (DK GRN). The SECURITY indicator turns off. At this point, in order to enter the armed mode, you must repeat the arming sequence. The CTD system can enter the armed mode with the windows open.

Arming the System

Use the following procedure in order to arm the CTD system:

  1. Close all of the windows.
  2. Place the shift lever in PARK.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK. Remove the key.
  4. Open any door.
  5. Lock the doors with the power door lock switch or the lock button on the key fob.
  6. Close all doors.

After approximately 30 seconds, the SECURITY indicator turns off. The system is now armed. Any detected forced entry activates the alarm. In order to disarm the CTD system, refer to Disarming the System.

Locking the Vehicle Without Arming the System

Follow one of the following procedures in order to lock the vehicle without arming the system:

  1. Manual Lock
  2. 1.1. Use the manual door lock knobs in order to lock the vehicle.
    1.2. Close all doors.
  3. Key Lock
  4. 2.1. Close all doors.
2.2. Use the key in order to lock the door or the power door lock switch. In order to use this method, the doors must be closed prior to locking.

Disarming the System (Standby, Delayed, and Armed Modes)

In order to disarm the system in the stand by mode (the SECURITY indicator is flashing and the doors are open) complete either of the following steps:

    • Press the power door lock switch to the UNLOCK position.
    • Press the UNLOCK button on the key fob.

In order to disarm the system in the delayed or armed mode, complete either of the following steps:

    • Use the key in order to unlock either front door.
    • Press the UNLOCK button on the key fob.

Deactivating the Alarm (Horns Sounding and Lights Flashing)

In order to deactivate the system in the alarm mode (horns sounding intermittently and headlights flashing), complete either of the following steps:

    • Use the key in order to unlock either front door.
    • Press the UNLOCK button on the key fob.

SECURITY Indicator Operation

The RFA illuminates the SECURITY indicator . The indicator is located in the instrument cluster (BUICK) or in the remote indicator bank (Oldsmobile) by grounding CKT 264 (DK GRN).
