For 1990-2009 cars only
Lip seals seal the rotating shafts. The lip seals require special treatment. Lip seals are used on the steering gear in the following locations:
| • | At the pinion shaft |
| • | On the pump drive shaft |
When a leak occurs in these areas, perform the following steps:
- Inspect the sealing surface.
- Clean the sealing surface.
- Replace the seal.
If corrosion in the lip seal contact zone is slight, clean the surface of the shaft using a crocus cloth. Replace the shaft only under the following conditions:
| • | You find such severe pitting that cleaning the shaft will not stop the leak |
| • | Unit Repair procedures indicate that the shaft is replaceable |
