Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left

1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
2. Disconnect the left spark plug wire harness and position aside.



3. Remove the engine lift bracket fasteners from the exhaust manifold stud and cylinder head.
4. Remove the engine lift bracket from the engine.



5. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover bolts.

Important: If the valve rocker arm cover adheres to the cylinder head, remove the valve rocker arm cover by bumping the end of the valve rocker arm cover with palm of hand or with a soft rubber mallet.

6. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover.
7. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover gasket.
8. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head and the valve rocker arm cover.
9. Clean the valve rocker arm cover bolts of all thread locking adhesive.

1. Install the new valve rocker arm cover gasket. Make sure that valve rocker arm cover gasket is seated properly in the valve rocker arm cover groove.
2. Install the left valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head.
3. Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent, to the valve rocker arm cover bolt threads.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

4. Install the left valve rocker arm cover bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).




5. Position the engine lift bracket to the engine.
6. Install the engine lift bracket fasteners to the exhaust manifold stud and cylinder head.

Tighten
Tighten the fasteners to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

7. Connect the left spark plug wire harness.
8. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
9. Inspect for proper fluid levels.
10. Inspect for oil leaks.

Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Right

1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
2. Disconnect the right spark plug wire harness and position aside.
3. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
4. Remove the AIR valve/pipe, if equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve/Pipe Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
5. Reposition the fuel line routing bracket.



6. Remove the two nuts attaching the fuel injector sight shield bracket to the right exhaust manifold studs.
7. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket.



8. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.

Important: If the valve rocker arm cover adheres to the cylinder head, remove the valve rocker arm cover by bumping the end of the valve rocker arm cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet.

9. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover.
10. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover gasket.
11. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head and the valve rocker arm cover.
12. Clean the valve rocker arm cover bolts of all thread locking adhesive.

1. Install the new valve rocker arm cover gasket. Make sure that the valve rocker arm cover gasket is seated properly in the valve rocker arm cover groove.
2. Install the right valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head.
3. Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 1234593 or equivalent, to the valve rocker arm cover bolt threads.
4. Install the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).




5. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket.
6. Install the two nuts attaching the fuel injector sight shield bracket to the right exhaust manifold studs.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

7. Install the AIR valve/pipe, if equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve/Pipe Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
8. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
9. Connect the right spark plug wire harness.
10. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
11. Check for proper fluid levels.
12. Check for oil leaks.
