Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request parameter in the PCM data list.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display Yes?

Go to Step 5

With a scan tool, observe the VTD Fuel Disable states in the PCM data list.

Does the scan tool display Active?

Go to Diagnostic System Check - Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent System

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Do you hear the START relay click?

Go to Step 8

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the START relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the START relay coil and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the START relay coil and the control circuit of the START relay.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the START relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the START relay switch circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the START relay switch circuit and the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Disconnect the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid.
  2. Connect a test lamp between supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the control circuit of the START relay for an open or short to battery voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the crank request input circuit of the PCM for an open or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Important:: Perform the set up procedures for the PCM/VCM.
