Front Wheel Drive Shaft Seal Replacement Left

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23129 Axle Seal Remover
    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer Adapter
    • J 6125-B Slide Hammer
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the left stabilizer shaft link from the left lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  4. Remove the left tie rod end from the left steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  5. Remove the left lower ball joint from the left steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Disconnect the left drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  7. Secure the left drive axle to the left steering knuckle and strut.

  8. Object Number: 49300  Size: SH
  9. Use the J 6125-B , J 6125-1B , and the J 23129 to remove the seal (409).

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 34115 Left Side Axle Seal Installer


    Object Number: 190634  Size: SH
  1. Use a light wipe of transaxle fluid to lubricate the seal lip.
  2. Use the J 34115 to install a new seal (409).
  3. Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do NOT allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface or damage to the seal will occur.

  4. Connect the drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  5. Install the left lower ball joint to the left steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Install the left tie rod end to the left steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  7. Install the left stabilizer shaft link to the left lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  8. Install the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications .

Front Wheel Drive Shaft Seal Replacement Right

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer
    • J 23129 Axle Boot Remover
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the right stabilizer shaft link from the right lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  4. Remove the right tie rod end from the right steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  5. Remove the right lower ball joint from the right steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Disconnect the right drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  7. Secure the right drive axle to the right steering knuckle and strut.

  8. Object Number: 640539  Size: SH
  9. Use the J 6125-1B  (3), and the J 23129  (2) to remove the seal  (1).

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 29130 Right Side Axle Seal Installer


    Object Number: 190628  Size: SH
  1. Use a light wipe of transaxle fluid to lubricate the seal lip.
  2. Use the J 29130 to install a new seal (4).
  3. Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do NOT allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface or damage to the seal will occur.

  4. Connect the drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  5. Install the right lower ball joint to the right steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Install the right tie rod end to the right steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  7. Install the right stabilizer shaft link to the right steering knuckle. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  8. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications .
