  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, command the reverse lamp relay ON and OFF.

Do the reverse lamps turn ON and OFF with each command?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the reverse lamp relay output circuit at the reverse lamp relay and a good ground.
  2. With a scan tool, command the reverse lamp relay ON and OFF.

Did the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?

Test the reverse lamp power output circuit for high resistance or open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the high resistance or open in the reverse lamp ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the reverse lamp relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF
  4. Probe the coil side feed circuit of the reverse lamp relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Probe the switch side feed circuit of the reverse lamp relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a test lamp from the coil side feed circuit to the control circuit of the reverse lamp relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, command the reverse lamp relay ON and OFF.

Inspect for poor connections at the reverse lamp relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
