The headlamps may be turned on 3 different ways. The headlamps will turn on when the headlamp switch is placed in the ON position. If the headlamp switch is left in the ON position, the headlamps will be deactivated after 10 minutes following a ignition switch transition to the OFF position and delayed accessory buss being deactivated because of the battery rundown protection. If the headlamp switch is turned on with the ignition switch in the OFF position, there is not a time out and the headlamps will remain on until the headlamp switch is turned off or the battery runs down. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the headlamps will automatically turn on during nighttime conditions when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the headlamps will automatically turn on after 6 seconds when the windshield wipers are turned on and the ignition switch is in the ON position.
When the low beam headlamps are on, the headlamps may be switched to the high beams by pulling the headlamp dimmer switch toward the driver and releasing. When the headlamp dimmer switch is again pulled back, the headlamps will then switch to the low beams from the high beams.
The twilight sentinel is a convenience system that controls the operation of the exterior lamps in response to the level of ambient light. The twilight sentinel turns on and off the headlamps depending on whether nighttime or daytime conditions are sensed. The twilight sentinel will also keep the exterior lamps on for a pre-selected period of time after the ignition is turned to the OFF position with nighttime conditions sensed. The exterior lamps will be turned off automatically after the delay period elapses. The delay period ranges from a few seconds to 3 minutes in approximately 10 second increments. Even though the twilight sentinel lighting can not be turned off if the gear selector is out of the park position, it can be disabled by activating the manual park lamps when the twilight lighting is active.
The daytime running lamps (DRL) illuminate the high beam headlamps at a reduced intensity. The DRL will operate during the day when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position and the gear selector lever is out of the PARK position. Any function that turns on the headlamps will override and disable the DRL system.
When the headlamp dimmer switch is slightly pulled toward the driver, the high beam headlamps will light for as long as the switch is held. This will occur in any headlamp state (off, DRL, low beams). If the low beams are on, the high beam headlamps will light in addition to the low beams.
The park lamps will turn on when the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK or ON position. If the headlamp switch is left in the PARK or ON position, the park lamps will be deactivated after 10 minutes following a ignition switch transition to the OFF position, because of the battery rundown protection. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the park lamps will automatically turn on along with the headlamps during nighttime conditions when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. With the twilight sentinel in an ON position, the park lamps will automatically turn on along with the headlamps when the windshield wipers are turned on and the vehicle ignition switch is in the ON position.
The turn lamps may only be activated with the ignition switch in the ON or START position. When the turn signal switch is placed in a position in order to indicate a left turn or a right turn, the respective turn lamps will flash. The respective turn indicator will flash on the instrument cluster (IPC).
The left or right cornering lamp will light when the associated turn signal lamps are active.
When the hazard switch is pressed, all turn lamps will flash. Both turn indicators will flash on the instrument cluster (IPC).
When the brake pedal is pressed, all stoplamps and the center high mounted stoplamps (CHMSL) light. The hazard lamps and turn lamps override the stop lamp operation, except for the center high mounted stop lamps (CHMSL).
When the ignition switch is in the ON position and the gear selector lever is in the REVERSE position, the backup lamps light.
When the park lamps are on and the hood is opened, the underhood lamp lights.
Each of the reading lamps may be manually turned on and off using the respective switch. The rear reading lamps are included in the DH6 option.
The courtesy lamps, including the reading lamps, may be manually turned on or off by placing the courtesy lamp switch in the ON or OFF position. The courtesy lamps will also automatically turn on at night when any of the four doors are opened. After all doors are closed, the courtesy lamps of the last door closed will remain on for approximately 25 seconds. The courtesy lamps will deactivate via theater dim , if the ignition switch is turned to RUN. If an all door lock command is received with all doors closed the lights will immediately deactivate.
When the rear compartment lid is opened, the rear compartment lamp lights.
On vehicle equiped with the DH6 option, when the vanity mirror cover on the sunshade is opened, the vanity lamp lights. The vanity lamp may be dimmed through the sliding switch next to the mirror.
When the IP compartment is opened, the IP compartment lamp lights.
When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays turn on at maximum brightness. When the park lamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates nighttime conditions, all incandescent switch backlighting turns on at the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer control and all VF displays dim to match the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer control. When the IP dimmer control is moved from MIN to MAX, all VF displays and incandescent switch backlighting dimming level goes from minimum intensity to maximum brightness in response to the IP dimmer control.
