Removal Procedure

Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

   • Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module
   • Make sure the bag opening points away from you
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  2. Remove the right insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  3. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) (4) from the instrument panel (IP) module connector (2).
  4. Remove the IP module yellow 2-way connector (2) from the harness yellow 2-way connector (1).
  5. Remove the IP module yellow 2-way connector (2) from the IP bracket (3).

  7. Remove the IP upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  8. Note the IP module wire harness routing position in order to help in re-assembly.
  9. Push the IP module yellow 2-way connector (2) away from the IP (3).

  11. Remove the mounting fasteners (2) from the inflatable restraint IP module.
  12. Important: When removing the inflatable restraint IP module, do not the damage inflatable restraint IP module pigtail.

  13. Remove the IP module (3) from the IP (1).
  14. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling, Shipping, and Scrapping .

Installation Procedure

    Important: When installing the inflatable restraint IP module, do not the damage inflatable restraint IP module pigtail.

  1. Route the IP module pigtail (4) down through the IP (1).
  2. Install the IP module (3) to the IP (1).
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the mounting fasteners (2) to the IP module.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  6. Route the wiring harness (2) for the inflatable restraint IP module and secure the yellow 2-way connector clip to the IP (3).
  7. Install the IP upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

  9. Clip the yellow 2-way connector (2) to the IP bracket (3).
  10. Install the yellow 2-way connector (2) to the vehicle harness yellow 2-way connector (1).
  11. Install the CPA (4) to the inflatable restraint IP module connector (2).
  12. Install the right insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
