Condition

Some customers may comment that some of the above listed vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following conditions:

    • The horn continuously activates when the outside air temperature falls below 0°C (32°F).
    • The horn does not operate as a result of the first condition.

Cause

The conditions listed above may be due to the thermal contraction of the steering wheel inflatable restraint module cover when the outside air temperature falls below 0°C (32°F).

    • When the steering wheel inflatable restraint module cover contracts, the gap between the steering wheel inflatable restraint module cover and the horn switch assembly is reduced, resulting in the horn sounding while the vehicle is parked and unattended.
    • The horn will continue to sound spontaneously until the fuse blows or the horn burns out, resulting in an inoperative horn.

Correction

Replace the steering wheel inflatable restraint module.

Refer to the Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement procedures in the SIR sub-section of the applicable Service Manual.
