Column Lock Pin
Removal Procedure
Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column
in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate
shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly
to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.
- Position the steering wheel in the straight forward position.
- Insert the J 42640
into the steering column access hole
in order to lock the steering column, this will maintain the correct orientation.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
- Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
- Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
- Remove the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
- Remove the intermediate
steering shaft seal from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
Important: The intermediate shaft will guide the seal into position on the steering
column.
- Install the intermediate shaft seal into the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Line up the intermediate shaft seal with the holes on the floor pan
and install the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 3 N·m (27 lb in).
- Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Align the lower portion of the seal to the steering gear.
- Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
- Remove the J 42640
from the steering column access hole.
- Operate the steering in order to verify there is no binding between
the intermediate steering shaft and intermediate steering shaft seal.
