Pin Remover
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
in SIR.
- Remove the turn signal switch housing. Refer to
Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement
.
- Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to
Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement
.
- Remove the linear shift assembly and the automatic transmission
shift lock control only. Refer to
Linear Shift Assembly Replacement
.
- Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column
support assembly using
J 21854-01
.
- If the steering shaft
position sensor is present, perform the following steps:
6.1. | Remove the boot (5). |
6.2. | Remove the steering shaft seal (4). |
6.3. | Remove the sensor retainer (3). |
6.4. | Remove the sensor locator (2). |
6.5. | Remove the steering shaft position sensor (1). |
- If you do not have a steering
shaft position sensor, perform the following:
7.1. | Remove the boot (4). |
7.2. | Remove the steering shaft seal (3). |
7.3. | Remove the sensor retainer (2). |
7.4. | Remove the boot seal (1). |
- Remove the 3 flat
head screws.
- Remove the cable support bracket.
- Remove the tilt head assembly (1)
from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3)
still attached.
- Remove the tilt head assembly (1)
from the steering shaft assembly (2).
Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2)
to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering
wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
- Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft
assembly and disengage.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the race and
upper shaft assembly with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).
- Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the
lower shaft assembly marks you made from the disassemble procedure.
- Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Install the cable support
bracket.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Lubricate the 3 flat head screws with LOCTITE® 242,
GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489).
Install the 3 flat head screws.
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- If no steering shaft position
sensor is present, perform the following steps:
6.1. | Install the boot seal (1). |
6.2. | Install the sensor retainer (2). |
6.3. | Install the steering shaft seal (3). |
6.4. | Install the boot (4). |
- If a steering shaft position
sensor is present, perform the following steps:
7.1. | Install the steering shaft position sensor (1). |
The steering shaft position sensor must be aligned to the 9 o'clock
position.
7.2. | Install the sensor locator (2). |
7.3. | Install the sensor retainer (3). |
7.4. | Install the steering shaft seal (4). |
7.5. | Install the boot (5). |
- Install the steering shaft
assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
- Install the tilt head
assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column
jacket assembly (2).
Important: Once the steering column support and the pivot pins have been staked
3 times, replace the steering column support.
- Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).
Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support
assembly. Stake the pins in 3 places.
Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of
the coil, which may cause personal injury.
- Install the linear shift assembly and the automatic transmission
shift lock control only. Refer to
Linear Shift Assembly Replacement

- Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to
Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement
.
- Install the turn signal switch housing. Refer to
Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement
.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
in SIR.
