Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
  2. Remove the right engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side.

  3. Object Number: 535633  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from engine oil level sensor.
  5. Remove the engine oil level sensor from the oil pan.
  6. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E.

  7. Object Number: 638517  Size: SH
  8. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  9. Remove the oil pan.
  10. Remove the oil pump pipe and screen. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Replacement.
  11. Clean the cylinder block mating surfaces.
  12. Clean and inspect the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the oil pump pipe and screen. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 1794843  Size: SH
  3. Apply a continuous bead 3.0 mm (0.19 in) thick of RTV GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the oil pan flange on the block as well as an additional drop to all four corners of the block where the front and rear covers meet (1).

  4. Object Number: 1794845  Size: SH
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6. Apply one drop of GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) to each bolt.
  7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 638517  Size: SH
  8. Install the oil pan bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  10. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  11. Notice: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in the Preface section.

  12. Install the engine oil level sensor into the oil pan.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the engine oil level sensor to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  14. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the engine oil level sensor.
  15. Install the right engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side.
  16. Fill the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
  17. Inspect for oil leaks after engine start up.
