For 1990-2009 cars only
Removal Procedure
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
- Remove the right engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side.
- Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from engine oil level sensor.
- Remove the engine oil level sensor from the oil pan.
- Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E.
- Remove the oil pan bolts.
- Remove the oil pan.
- Remove the oil pump pipe and screen. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Replacement.
- Clean the cylinder block mating surfaces.
- Clean and inspect the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L Unit Repair.
Installation Procedure
- Install the oil pump pipe and screen. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Replacement.
- Apply a continuous bead 3.0 mm (0.19 in) thick of RTV GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the oil pan flange on the block as well as an additional drop to all four corners of the block where the front and rear covers meet (1).
- Install the oil pan.
- Apply one drop of GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) to each bolt.
- Install the oil pan bolts.
- Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
- Install the engine oil level sensor into the oil pan.
- Connect the electrical connector (1) to the engine oil level sensor.
- Install the right engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side.
- Fill the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
- Inspect for oil leaks after engine start up.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
Tighten
Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).
Notice: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in the Preface section.
Tighten
Tighten the engine oil level sensor to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
