General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 1988 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles equipped with police car option, 5.7L engine and heater only option. The unused air conditioning (A/C) wiring harness connector may not be properly secured. This condition could allow the connector to contact the exhaust manifold where it could melt and/or short out and cause an engine compartment fire. Such a fire could, in time, spread to the passenger compartment.
To correct this condition, the unused A/C wiring harness connector is to be removed and the remaining wiring properly secured.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
