    • J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 42863 Valve Stem Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 406031  Size: SH

    Important: Rotate the engine so that the piston in the cylinder being worked on is at top dead center before removing the valve locks. This will eliminate the possibility of the valve accidentally falling inside the cylinder.

  1. Remove the valve rocker arm(s) and push rod(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  2. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
  3. Install the J 23590 to the spark plug port and apply compressed air in order to hold the valves closed.

  4. Object Number: 406033  Size: SH
  5. Install the J 38606 on the valve spring.

  6. Object Number: 190527  Size: SH
  7. Compress the valve spring using the J 38606 .
  8. Remove the valve locks.
  9. Remove the valve spring and cap.

  10. Object Number: 406035  Size: SH
  11. Remove the valve stem oil seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 40071  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Use hand pressure to install the valve stem oil seal.
       • The color of the replacement seal may not be the same color as the original seal. Install the seals in their correct location based on GM part and package description. Make sure that the seal is fully seated on the valve guide.

  1. Place the oil seal over the stem until the seal begins to contact the valve guide.
  2. Use the J 42863 to install the valve stem oil seal over the valve guide.

  3. Object Number: 406033  Size: SH
  4. Install the J 38606 on the valve spring.

  5. Object Number: 190527  Size: SH
  6. Compress the valve spring using the J 38606 .
  7. Install the valve spring and cap.
  8. Install the valve locks.
  9. Release the valve spring.

  10. Object Number: 406031  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure that the valve locks are seated.

  11. Release the air pressure, and remove the J 23590 .
  12. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
  13. Install the push rod(s) and valve rocker arm(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
