The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the engine cranks but will not start. When diagnosing there may or may not be any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

Recommendation/Instructions:

Using a scan tool, check to see if there are any DTCs.

    • If there are DTCs and they are NOT related to the crankshaft sensor, continue with your diagnosis and refer to the information in SI as necessary.
    • If there are DTCs that ARE related to the crankshaft sensor (P0315, P0335, P0336, P0385, P0386) then continue to the next step.
    • If there are "no" DTCs and your diagnosis is directing you to the crankshaft sensor, then proceed to the next step.
    •  If there are "no" DTCs and your diagnosis is directing you to something other than the crankshaft sensor, then continue with your diagnosis and refer to the information in SI as necessary.

Metro Detroit Dealers:

Engineering is looking for a vehicle in the "Metro Detroit" (Southeast Michigan) area that exhibits the condition and your diagnosis or DTCs have led you to the crankshaft sensor. Dealers in the "Metro Detroit" area that have such a vehicle should contact Jim Kelly at (586) 492-5612. He will assist in making arrangements for Engineering to review the vehicle at your Metro Detroit area location

All Other Dealers:

Continue with your diagnosis using the information in SI and make repairs as necessary. If your diagnosis leads you to replacing the crankshaft sensor, install a NEW sensor that was made AFTER February 6, 2007. To determine when a sensor was made you will need to examine the numbers printed in white ink on a NEW sensor. When looking at the NEW sensor you will see two different sets of numbers. The numbers that determine when a sensor was made are located BETWEEN the two letters (e.g. DR) and the word Mexico. The other four numbers located ABOVE the two letters relate to the part number and are not important at this time. Sensors made after February 6, 2007 will have a number higher than 7037 (e.g. 7038, 7039 and so on). In the number 7037, the first seven represents calendar year 2007, and the 037 represents the thirty-seventh day (February 6th). So any number higher than 7037 can be installed. Sensors with a number of 7037 or lower should not be installed and should be returned to GMSPO

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
