The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the engine cranks but will not start. When diagnosing there may or may not be any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

Recommendation/Instructions:

Using a scan tool, check to see if there are any DTCs

    • If there are DTCs and they are NOT related to the crankshaft sensor, continue with your diagnosis and refer to the information in SI as necessary.
    • If there are DTCs that ARE related to the crankshaft sensor (P0315, P0335, P0336, P0385, P0386) then continue to the next step.
    • If there are "no" DTCs and your diagnosis is directing you to something other than the crankshaft sensor, then continue with your diagnosis and refer to the information in SI as necessary.
    • If there are "no" DTCs and your diagnosis is directing you to the crankshaft sensor, then proceed to the next step.

Continue with your diagnosis using the information in SI and make repairs as necessary. If your diagnosis leads you to replacing the crankshaft sensor, install a NEW sensor. Please note that all crank sensors currently available from GMSPO are of the latest design. Refer to the appropriate GMSPO catalog for crank sensor part numbers and usages.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
