Subject:SERVICE STABILITRAK C0186 C0196

Models:2006- 2008 Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that SERVICE STABILITRAK is displayed at times. Interrogation of the vehicle with a scan tool will reveal that one or both of the following DTC are stored:

   •

C0186 00: Lateral Accelerometer Circuit

   •

C0196 00: Yaw Rate Circuit No Additional Information

The cause may be the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) software. A concern has been identified that will cause C0186 or C0196 to store when a very specific driving scenario is performed. This scenario begins with shifting the transmission from Park within 3 seconds after the engine is started and driving in reverse with steering input of about 70 degrees or more.

Recommendation/Instructions:

If the concern can be reproduced, follow the SI Diagnostic Information and Procedures for the DTC. When the repair is completed, program the EBCM with the most current calibration before returning the vehicle to the customer. If the concern cannot be reproduced, then care needs to be taken to rule out potential causes other than software.

  1. Closely question the customer about the driving maneuver being performed prior to the SERVICE STABILITRAK warning message appearing and compare to the scenario listed above.
  2. Make the following inspections of the vehicle's wiring and connections; repair any discrepancies found.
  3. • Inspect C111 Engine Harness to the Body Harness (reference PIC4557).
    • Inspect the engine harness for chaffing and proper routing.
    • Inspect the EBCM connector.
    • Inspect the Yaw and Lateral Acceleration Sensor connector.
    • Inspect the Instrument Panel wiring harness (reference PIC4520A).
  4. Program the EBCM with the most current software calibration.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
