The automatic transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is a thermistor type sensor. The transmission control module (TCM) supplies a 5-volt reference signal to the sensor. When the transmission fluid is cold, the sensor resistance is high and the TCM senses a high signal voltage. As the transmission fluid warms, the sensor resistance lowers and the TCM senses lower voltage. The TCM uses the TFT reading in order to control the torque converter clutch (TCC), line pressure adjustments, and temperature compensated shifts.

Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Type Definitions
• | J 35616 GM-Approved Terminal Test Kit |
• | J 44152 Jumper Harness (20 Pins) |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the TCM side of the 20-way harness connector signal circuit terminal L for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM. |
Important: If the signal circuit of the TFT sensor is shorted to voltage the TFT sensor may be damaged.
⇒ | If less than the specified range test the signal circuit of the TFT sensor for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM. |
Install the J 44152 on the transmission side of the AT 20-way inline connector. Using the J 35616 measure the resistance between the TFT sensor signal circuit and the low reference circuit. Refer to Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Specifications.
⇒ | If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the transmission wiring harness or the TFT sensor. |
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the repair.
