J 36850 Transjel

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
  3. Remove the right front tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  4. Note: Carefully guide the right drive axle output shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the lip seal surface.

  5. Remove the right drive axle from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.

  7. Remove the case extension bolts.

  8. Object Number: 732550  Size: SH
  9. Loosen the torque strut bracket to engine bolts as needed.
  10. Swing the bracket out of the way.

  11. Object Number: 97407  Size: SH
  12. Remove the case extension assembly and the seal.

  13. Object Number: 97409  Size: SH
  14. Remove the thrust bearing and the thrust bearing washer.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 97409  Size: SH
  1. Install the washer and the thrust bearing onto the final drive assembly. Use the J 36850 or the equivalent (petroleum jelly), in order to retain the washer and the bearing.

  2. Object Number: 97407  Size: SH
  3. Install the seal and the case extension.
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 732550  Size: SH
  5. Install the torque strut bracket to engine bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  7. Install the case extension bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 36 N·m (26 lb ft).

  9. Install the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
  10. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  11. Install the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Fill the transaxle to the proper level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications.
  14. Inspect the transaxle fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check.
  15. Inspect for fluid leaks.
