OIL CANNING NOISE FROM SPARE TIRE AREA (REPAIR INFO)

CONDITION:

SOME OF THE 1991-92 C AND 1992 H MODELS MAY EXHIBIT AN OIL CANNING NOISE FROM THE SPARE TIRE AREA IN THE REAR COMPARTMENT. THIS CONDITION CAN BE VERIFIED BY PUSHING UP ON THE TRUNK FLOOR THROUGH AN ACCESS HOLE IN THE UNDERCARRIAGE (SEE ILLUSTRATION).

CORRECTION:

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, THE SPARE TIRE WELL MUST BE REWORKED IN THE AREA SHOWN IN THE ILLUSTRATION. THE REWORK FOR THIS NOISE IS TO DIMPLE THE SHEET METAL IN THE AREA SHOWN WITH A HAMMER. THE DIMPLING IS TO BE DONE FROM INSIDE THE TRUNK. THE FRONT TO REAR LOCATION OF THE DIMPLE MUST BE EVEN WITH THE CENTERLINE OF THE FORWARD DRAIN. THE CROSS CAR LOCATION IS ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY ACROSS THE TIRE WELL STARTING AT THE CENTERLINE OF THE CAR. THE DIMPLING SHRINKS AND TIGHTENS THE METAL TO CORRECT THE OIL CANNING NOISE.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
