CAUTION:

THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR). REFER TO CAUTIONS IN SECTION 9J UNDER ON-VEHICLE SERVICE AND THE SIR COMPONENT AND WIRING LOCATION VIEW IN SECTION 9J BEFORE PERFORMING SERVICE ON OR AROUND SIR COMPONENTS OR WIRING. FAILURE TO FOLLOW CAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN POSSIBLE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY OR OTHERWISE UNNEEDED SIR SYSTEM REPAIRS.

NOTICE:

ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT FASTENER IN THE CORRECT LOCATION. WHEN YOU USE A FASTENER, USE ONLY THE EXACT PART NUMBER FOR THAT APPLICATION. GENERAL MOTORS WILL CALL OUT THOSE FASTENERS THAT REQUIRE A REPLACEMENT FOR REMOVAL. GENERAL MOTORS WILL ALSO CALL OUT THE FASTENERS THAT REQUIRE THREAD LOCKERS OR THREAD SEALANT. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, DO NOT USE SUPPLEMENTAL COATINGS (PAINTS, GREASES, OR OTHER CORROSION INHIBITORS) ON THREADED FASTENERS OR FASTENER JOINT INTERFACES. GENERALLY, SUCH COATINGS ADVERSELY AFFECT THE FASTENER TORQUE AND THE JOINT CLAMPING FORCE, AND MAY DAMAGE THE FASTENERS. WHEN YOU INSTALL FASTENERS, USE THE CORRECT TIGHTENING SEQUENCE AND SPECIFICATIONS. FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN HELP YOU AVOID DAMAGE TO PARTS AND SYSTEMS.

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR (RFA) SYSTEM IS INTENDED TO BE USED AS A SUPPLEMENTARY VEHICLE ENTRY DEVICE. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE, BUT RATHER SHOULD BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH, A DOOR LOCK KEY. THE SYSTEM COULD BE DISABLED DUE TO RADIO FREQUENCY OR LOW TRANSMITTER BATTERY POWER LEVEL. IT IS, THEREFORE, NECESSARY TO ALWAYS MAINTAIN ACCESS TO A DOOR LOCK KEY.

THE REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR IS A FEATURE WHICH ALLOWS FOR OPERATION OF THE DOOR LOCKS, LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT ENTRY, ILLUMINATED ENTRY LIGHTS (IF EQUIPPED) AND PANIC BUTTON.

THE TWO MAIN SYSTEM COMPONENTS ARE THE TRANSMITTERS AND REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR MODULE. THE TRANSMITTER UNIT SENDS A DIGITALLY ENCODED RADIO SIGNAL TO THE RFA MODULE IN RESPONSE TO A BUTTON ON THE TRANSMITTER BEING PRESSED BY THE VEHICLE OPERATOR. THE RFA MODULE INTERPRETS THE SIGNAL AND ACTIVATES THE REQUIRED CIRCUITRY TO PROVIDE THE REQUESTED FUNCTION.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS =================

TRANSMITTERS (FOB)

FIGURE 1

THE TRANSMITTER UNIT IS A BATTERY POWERED, WATER RESISTANT, RADIO FREQUENCY SIGNAL GENERATOR. TWO TRANSMITTERS ARE PROVIDED WITH THE VEHICLE, AND EACH IS UNIQUELY RECOGNIZED BY THE RFA MODULE. THE MODULE IS CAPABLE OF RECOGNIZING UP TO FOUR TRANSMITTERS. REPLACEMENT TRANSMITTERS FOR THE VEHICLE MAY BE OBTAINED; HOWEVER, THE RFA MODULE MUST BE REPROGRAMMED TO ACCEPT THE NEW TRANSMITTER.

REPROGRAMMING THE RFA MODULE IS COVERED IN "ON-VEHICLE SERVICE" IN THIS SECTION.

THE RFA SYSTEM CAN EXECUTE THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS IN RESPONSE TO THE VEHICLE OPERATOR PRESSING A TRANSMITTER BUTTON (THE TRANSMITTER RANGE IS APPROXIMATELY 10 METERS {30 FEET}, THE TRANSMITTER SHOULD BE USED WITHIN THIS RANGE FOR CONSISTENT OPERATION).

O PRESSING THE UNLOCK BUTTON ONCE UNLOCKS THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND TURNS ON THE INTERIOR LAMPS IF THE IGNITION IS OFF.

O PRESSING THE UNLOCK BUTTON A SECOND TIME WITHIN FIVE SECONDS UNLOCKS ALL DOORS AND TURNS ON THE INTERIOR LAMPS IF THE IGNITION IS OFF.

O PRESSING THE LOCK BUTTON LOCKS ALL DOORS.

O PRESSING THE TRUNK BUTTON OPENS THE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT.

O PRESSING THE PANIC BUTTON SOUNDS THE HORN AND FLASHES LIGHTS FOR UP TO 2 MINUTES. IT CAN BE DEACTIVATED BY PRESSING THE TRANSMITTER BUTTON, UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE WITH A KEY (IF VEHICLE HAS UA6) OR TURNING ON THE IGNITION.

THE RFA SYSTEM TRANSMITTERS REQUIRE PERIODIC BATTERY REPLACEMENT. BATTERY LIFE UNDER NORMAL OPERATION SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY TWO YEARS. THE BACK SIDE OF THE TRANSMITTER CAN BE REMOVED TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE BATTERY. REFER TO "ON-VEHICLE SERVICE" IN THIS SECTION FOR TRANSMITTER BATTERY REPLACEMENT.

REMOTE FUNCTION ACTUATOR (RFA) MODULE

THE RFA MODULE IS LOCATED UNDER THE I/P ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE MODULE RECEIVES AND INTERPRETS THE TRANSMITTER SIGNALS, THEN ACTIVATES THE REQUIRED CIRCUITRY TO PROVIDE THE REQUESTED FUNCTION. THE RFA MODULE IS ABLE TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE VARIOUS TRANSMITTERS, AND MUST BE REPROGRAMMED TO ACCEPT SIGNALS FROM ALL TRANSMITTERS IF ANY TRANSMITTERS ARE REPLACED. FOR RFA MODULE REPROGRAMMING, REFER TO "ON-VEHICLE SERVICE" IN THIS SECTION.

DIAGNOSIS

REFER TO SECTION 8A-132 FOR DIAGNOSIS AND ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS.

SYSTEM OPERATION ================

IMPORTANT:

WHILE USING TECH 1 OR TECH 2 TO PROGRAM THE RFA MODULE, USE THE EXIT KEY TO CHANGE FROM ONE FUNCTION SCREEN TO ANOTHER. DO NOT USE THE YES OR NO KEYS. IF YES OR NO IS PRESSED, OTHER FEATURES MAY BECOME DISABLED.

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY

O TRUNK WILL NOT OPEN IF IGNITION IS ON AND VEHICLE IS NOT IN PARK (P).

O COURTESY LIGHTS WILL TURN ON FOR 40 SECONDS OR UNTIL DOOR IS OPENED OR LOCK SWITCH PRESSED OR UNLOCK IS PRESSED.

O COURTESY LIGHTS WILL NOT TURN ON WHEN TRUNK IS PRESSED.

LOCK-OUT PREVENTION

THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCHES WILL BE DISABLED WHENEVER THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION AND THE DRIVER'S DOOR IS OPEN. THIS FEATURE CAN BE OVERRIDDEN BY PRESSING THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCH FOR GREATER THAN 3 SECONDS.

AUTO DOOR LOCKS (ADL)

THE AUTO DOOR LOCK FEATURE IS PROGRAMMABLE BY THE OWNER FOR 4 DIFFERENT LOCK AND UNLOCK MODES.

BUICK AND OLDSMOBILE

RESYNCHRONIZING TRANSMITTERS

IF A TRANSMITTER DOES NOT SEEM TO WORK ANYMORE, AND YOU ARE SURE THE BATTERY IS GOOD, TRY THE PANIC BUTTON. IF THE PANIC BUTTON DOES NOT WORK, THE TRANSMITTER IS BAD. HOWEVER, IF THE PANIC BUTTON DOES BEEP THE HORN AND FLASH THE LIGHTS, THE TRANSMITTER IS OUT OF SYNC. WITH THE RFA SYSTEM, THERE ARE TWO WAYS A TRANSMITTER CAN GET OUT OF SYNC: CHANGING THE TRANSMITTER'S BATTERY, AND PRESSING THE TRANSMITTER BUTTONS TOO MANY TIMES WHILE OUT OF RANGE OF THE VEHICLE.

TO RESYNC THE TRANSMITTERS, DO NOT JUMPER THE DLC. PRESS AND HOLD THE LOCK AND UNLOCK BUTTONS FOR ABOUT 8 SECONDS UNTIL THE HORN CHIRPS AND THE LIGHTS FLASH. THE TRANSMITTER IS NOW SYNCHRONIZED.
