J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the torque axis engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  2. Remove the torque axis mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  4. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  5. For Engine Code 1, remove the drive belt idler pulley and the pulley bracket. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Bracket Replacement .
  6. Remove the two heater hoses from the belt tensioner.
  7. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  8. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  9. Remove the generator support brace. Refer to Generator in Charging System.
  10. Remove the generator and set aside. Refer to Generator in Charging System.

  12. Disconnect the electronic ignition module.

  14. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield.
  15. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  16. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
  17. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts.

  19. Remove the front cover attaching bolts.
  20. Remove the front cover.
  21. Inspect the timing chain for overall in and out movement. Movement should not exceed 25 mm (1 in).
  22. Inspect the sprockets for wear.
  23. Clean the gasket mating surfaces at the timing chain cover, and cylinder block.
  24. If the oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gasket at the cylinder block.
  2. Loosen the oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan to allow clearance for the front cover installation.

  3. Object Number: 42228  Size: SH
  4. Install the front cover.
  5. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the bolt threads.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the front cover attaching bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolts an additional 40 degrees.

  9. Install the coolant pump pulley.

  11. Install the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield.
  13. Install the oil pan bolts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 N·m (125 lb in).

  15. Install the electronic ignition module.
  16. Install the generator. Refer to Generator in Charging System.
  17. Install the generator brace. Refer to Generator in Charging System.
  18. Notice: This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened, and therefore MUST be replaced anytime it is removed. The correct part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. The system or the components may be damaged.

  19. Install the crankshaft balancer and bolt. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  20. Install the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  21. Install the two heater hoses to the belt tensioner.
  22. For Engine Code 1, install the drive belt idler pulley. Install the pulley bracket. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Bracket Replacement .
  23. Install the steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  24. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  25. Remove the torque axis mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
  26. Remove the torque axis engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
