Water Pump Replacement L36

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement (VIN K) in Engine Mechanical.

  4. Object Number: 46174  Size: SH
  5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley.
  7. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 46178  Size: SH
  1. Using a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine.
  2. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolts (2) to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  3. Install the water pump bolts.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement (VIN K) in Engine Mechanical.
  6. Fill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Check for coolant leaks.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  2. Remove the bolts from the A/C compressor splash shield. Remove the splash shield.
  3. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  4. Remove the supercharger drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  6. Remove the coil pack. Position the coil pack out of the way.
  7. Remove the supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  8. Remove the engine support fixture.
  9. Remove the engine torque axis mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  10. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  11. Remove the engine torque axis mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Torque Axis Bracket) in Engine Mechanical.
  12. Remove the idler pulley. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  14. Remove the water pump pulley.

  15. Object Number: 46177  Size: SH
  16. Remove the water pump.
  17. Clean all of the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 46178  Size: SH
  1. Using a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine.
  2. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
        • Tighten the bolts (2) to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   3. Install the water pump pulley.

  4. Object Number: 46174  Size: SH
  5. Install the water pump pulley.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  7. Install the idler pulley. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulley in Engine Mechanical.
  8. Install the engine torque axis mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Torque Axis Bracket) in Engine Mechanical.
  9. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  10. Install the engine torque axis mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  11. Install the engine support fixture.
  12. Install the supercharger belt tensioner. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  13. Install the coil pack.
  14. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  15. Install the supercharger drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  16. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  17. Install the A/C compressor splash shield.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
  19. Check for coolant leaks.
