J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin

    Object Number: 263832 Size: SH

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Insert the J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column. This will maintain correct orientation.
  2. Remove the pinch bolt at the steering gear stub shaft.
  3. Remove the left IP closeout. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.

  4. Object Number: 141932 Size: SH
  5. Reposition the intermediate shaft seal (dust seal) in order to gain access to the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (2).
  6. Remove the pinch bolt (2).
  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft (1) from the steering column.
  8. Remove the intermediate steering shaft (1).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 141932 Size: SH
  1. Position the intermediate steering shaft (1). Insert the shaft fully into the pinch bolt pot joint on the steering column.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Bottom out the lower pinch pot joint on the steering gear.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the pinch bolt (2) to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  5. Reposition the seal as needed.
  6. Install the left IP closeout. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
  7. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
