J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the electronic lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Remove the tilt spring assembly. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  8. Remove the steering shaft seal (7).
  9. Remove the sensor retainer (6).
  10. Remove the dual triangle sensor assembly (5).
  11. Remove 2 lower spring retainers (4).
  12. Remove the lower bearing spring (3).
  13. Remove the lower bearing seat (2).
  14. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  16. Remove 2 pivot pins from the steering column support assembly with J 21854-01 .

  17. Object Number: 324937  Size: SH
  18. Install the tilt lever and tilt the column to the upright position.
  19. Remove the upper tilt head assembly with the steering shaft assembly.

  21. Remove the steering shaft assembly (1).

  22. Object Number: 295954  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  23. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the lower shaft assembly and disengage. If necessary, remove and discard the old centering sphere and spring.

  25. Remove 4 TORX® head screws (2) from the steering column support assembly (1).
  26. Remove the steering column support assembly (1) from the steering column jacket (3).
