Data Link Connector (DLC)

The DLC is a standardized 16 cavity connector. Connector design and location is dictated by an industry wide standard, and is required to provide the following:

    • Scan tool power battery positive voltage at terminal 16.
    • Scan tool power ground at terminal 4.
    • Common signal ground at terminal 5.
    • Class 2 serial data at terminal 2.
    • Keyless entry program enable signal at terminal 8.

All DLCs are required to provide a power supply, hot at all times, to pin 16. This circuit is used to power the scan tool. All DLCs supply a power ground at pin 4 and a clean signal ground at pin 5.

The Class  2 serial data circuit is provided at pin 2 of the DLC.

Class 2 Serial Data Line

The data line is configured as a ring with discrete lines entering and leaving each module. This allows communications to the modules on the ring if one of the two discrete circuits is open.

A total list of the control modules on the class 2 serial data line can include the following:

    • Body control module (BCM)
    • Driver door module (DDM)
    • Electronic brake control module (EBCM)
    • Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM)
    • Instrument panel cluster (IPC)
    • Instrument panel integration module (IPM)
    • Memory seat module (MSM) w/A45
    • Powertrain control module (PCM)
    • Remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR)
    • Theft deterrent control module
    • Vehicle interface unit (VIU) w/UE1

Power Door Serial Data Line

The power door serial data line does not communicate with the scan tool via the DLC. Power door serial data information is interpreted by the driver door module (DDM) and transmitted on the Class 2 data line by the DDM.

The power door serial data line is used for serial data communication between the door modules as well as the window switch - driver.

In order to diagnose the door lock serial data line, refer to Diagnostic System Check - Door Systems in Doors.

Entertainment and Comfort Serial Data Line

The entertainment and comfort serial data line does not communicate with the scan tool via the DLC. entertainment and comfort serial data line is used by the following modules to exchange information between the system components.

    • Instrument Panel Integration Module (IPM)
    • Radio
    • Remote Playback Device - CD Changer
    • Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU) w/EU1

In order to diagnose the entertainment and comfort serial data line, refer to Remote Playback Device Inoperative in Entertainment.

Keyless Entry Program Enable Line

The keyless entry program enable line allows the scan tool to command the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) into the program key fob mode. For diagnosis of this circuit, refer to Diagnostic System Check - Remote Keyless Entry in keyless entry.
