Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. When the vehicle is equipped with daytime running lamps, the left headlamp has ground through the lamp control module. The jumper wire in step 2 is needed to complete the ground circuit on the left headlamp.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn ON the headlamps.
  2. Position the headlamp dimmer switch in the high beam position.
  3. Turn OFF the headlamps.

Do the high beam headlamps operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Do the low beam headlamps operate properly?

Go to Step 4

  1. Disconnect the lamp control module (LCM).
  2. If the vehicle is not equipped with RPO T62, connect a 10-amp fused jumper between the DRL headlamp high beam supply voltage circuit of the LCM and ground.
  3. Connect a 20-amp fused jumper between the headlamp high beam supply voltage circuit of the LCM and battery positive voltage.

Do both of the high beam headlamps illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the headlamp dimmer switch high beam signal circuit of the LCM and battery positive voltage.
  2. Operate the high beam switch ON and OFF.

Did the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the high beam switch?

  1. Disconnect the inoperative high beam headlamp bulb.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the inoperative headlamp bulb headlamp high beam supply voltage circuit and inoperative headlamp bulb ground circuit.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the headlamp dimmer switch ground circuit for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the headlamp dimmer switch high beam signal circuit of the LCM for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the headlamp high beam supply voltage circuit for an high resistance, a open or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the DRL headlamp high beam supply voltage circuit of the LCM for a high resistance, a open or a short to battery positive voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the headlamp dimmer switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the headlamp dimmer switch. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
