Attention: Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in Service Information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL -- refer to TSB 04-00-89-053A for more detail on the use of Engineering Information bulletins.

Condition

Important:  If the customer did not comment on this condition, do not proceed with this bulletin.

Some customers may comment that the air from the vents is warm or the A/C is inoperative.

Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of HVAC control heads. GM has a need to obtain information first hand from the technician during diagnosis and BEFORE repairs are made. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix.

Important:  Do not replace the control head prior to calling engineering.

Follow diagnostic information found in Service Information. Proceed with all necessary repairs based on diagnosis, EXCEPT for control head replacement. ONLY if diagnostics lead to replacement of the control head, document the following information on the repair order prior to calling the engineer.

  1. Can the customer's concern be duplicated?
  2. What is the ambient outside temperature?
  3. Using temperature probes of the J 43600, record the air temperatures of the following vents:
  4. • driver side I/P
    • I/P center
    • passenger side I/P
  5. Use the following steps to determine if the A/C switch parameter state changes when the A/C request switch is pressed.
  6. 4.1. Install the scan tool.
4.2. Turn ignition ON with engine OFF.
4.3. Using the scan tool, observe the A/C switch parameter in the Heating and Air Conditioning data list while pressing the A/C request switch.
  7. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the HVAC control module. Were any of the following conditions noted:
  8.  - poor connection between male and female terminals at the connector
     - damaged and/or contaminated connector
  9. Contact the engineer listed below. Provide information that was documented on the repair order. The engineer will provide further repair information at the time of the call.
