Removal Procedure

Important: Inspect the fuel tank internally and clean the fuel tank if you find a restricted fuel filter. Refer to Fuel System Cleaning .

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Important: Due to an access hole in the fuel tank shield, removal of the shield should not be necessary to access the fuel filter.

  4. Only if necessary remove the fuel tank shield. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  5. Notice: Clean all of the following areas before performing any disconnections in order to avoid possible contamination in the system:

       • The fuel pipe connections
       • The hose connections
       • The areas surrounding the connections

    Important: The quick connect retaining clips will remain with the fuel filter.

  6. Disconnect the quick connect fittings from the fuel filter. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  7. Cap the fuel pipes in order to prevent possible fuel system contamination.

  9. Remove the fuel filter bracket screw (2).
  10. Remove the fuel filter (1) from the bracket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 862743  Size: SH

    Important: New quick connect retaining clips will be supplied with OEM replacement fuel filters (1).

  1. Install the fuel filter (1) into the bracket. Ensure that the fuel filter inlet tube is engaged in the fuel tank bracket orientation slot (5).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the fuel filter bracket screw (2). Ensure that the fuel tank bracket orientation key (4) is engaged in the strap (3) slot.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  5. Remove the caps from the fuel pipes.
  6. Connect the quick connect fittings to the fuel filter. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  9. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  10. Inspect for leaks.
  11. 8.1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    8.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    8.3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    8.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  12. Only if previously removed, install the fuel tank shield. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
