IF A HARSH ENGAGEMENT OCCURS WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE ONLY AND NOT IN DRIVE RANGE ON THE ABOVE VEHICLES, THE CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING: 1.DISASSEMBLE TRANSMISSION TO REMOVE THE LOW AND REVERSE PISTON AND THE 17 SPRING LOW AND REVERSE SPRING PACK. 2.SNAP OUT EVERY OTHER SPRING FROM THE LOW AND REVERSE SPRING PACK LEAVING 9 SPRINGS IN THE PACK. 3.REASSEMBLE THE TRANSMISSION UP TO THE DIRECT CLUTCH USING A NEW REVERSE CLUTCH PISTON (PART NUMBER 344212) AND THE SPRING PACK WITH THE 9 REMAINING SPRINGS. 4.REMOVE THE 6 CYLINDER MODEL DIRECT CLUTCH PISTON FROM THE DIRECT CLUTCH ASSEMBLY AND REPLACE WITH AN 8 CYLINDER MODEL DIRECT CLUTCH PISTON (PART NUMBER 6260197). THIS NARROWER PISTON PROVIDES CLUTCH PACK CLEARANCE FOR THE FOLLOWING INSTALLATIONS. 5.INSTALL A NEW FORWARD CLUTCH PISTON CUSHION "WAVE PLATE" (PART NUMBER 8640176) IN DRUM AGAINST THE PISTON. 6.INSTALL AN EXTRA STEEL CLUTCH PLATE (PART NUMBER 6261071) NEXT TO THE WAVE PLATE AND THEN ADD A STANDARD 6 CYLINDER MODEL DIRECT CLUTCH PACK ASSEMBLY (3 STEEL AND 3 FIBER PLATES). THERE WILL BE TWO STEEL PLATES NEXT TO EACH OTHER AT THE WAVE PLATE. 7.INSTALL PRESSURE PLATE AND RETAINING RING USING A FEELER GAGE. CHECK THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE PRESSURE PLATE THE THE FACE PLATE. CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION IS .029" MINIMUM TO .112" MAXIMUM. IF CLEARANCE MEASURED IS LESS THAN .029", A THINNER PRESSURE PLATE (PART NUMBER 6261349) SHOULD BE USED. 8.COMPLETE REASSEMBLY OF TRANSMISSION.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
