REAR LID LUGGAGE RACK DEALER INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

MODELS AFFECTED: 1986 ALL

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES BULLETIN NO. 86-9-2. PLEASE DISCARD THE ORIGINAL BULLETIN AND REPLACE IT WITH THIS ONE.

Effective with the 1986 model year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration established a motor vehicle safety standard requiring new passenger cars to be equipped with a center, high-mounted brake lamp. The Federal regulation (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108) prescribes visibility requirements for these brake lights.

It is essential that luggage racks installed on rear decks not interfere with the visibility requirements of the Federal standard. GM factory installed luggage racks, as well as properly installed luggage racks available for recommended applications, through GMWDD, do not interfere with these requirements.

Deck luggage racks are also available to dealers from independent sources. Dealers are advised to consult with these sources, as well as with their own legal counsel, to satisfy themselves that these luggage racks, as installed, do not interfere with the requirements of FMVSS 108.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
