On approximately February 25, 1985, 'Torque To Yield' head bolts similar to those used on the 1985 3.0L (VIN Code L) engine were introduced into production on 3.8L MFI (VIN Code 3) engines. The illustration below identifies the differences between the carryover design and new torque to yield bolt. Installation instructions for the new bolt are the same type as those provided in Bulletin 85-6-120 dated Jan. 31, 1985 for the 3.0L (VIN Code L) engine.
The 3.8L MFI engine which uses two different bolt lengths can be reassembled using either the carryover design bolt or the new one, but they should not be intermixed.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
