WINDNOISE, DOOR AND DOOR GLASS AREAS (DIAGNOSIS AND P/N)

VEHICLES AFFECTED 1988 W-CAR (DIAGNOSIS ----------------- AND PARTS REPLACEMENT)

Customer comments regarding windnoise on 1988 W-cars may be addressed by using the procedures on the individual items listed in this bulletin.

Proper diagnosis can be made with, a variety of tools and methods including stethoscopes, dust guns, sonic instruments, visual inspections, etc. It is important to remember that windnoise can best be described as air leaking from the inside of the vehicle outward while traveling at highway speeds. Turbulence or windrush is best described as air passing over and around body openings and moldings.

Prior to any repairs, the door, auxiliary weatherstrips and door opening weatherstrips should be visually inspected for proper gaps, fits, weatherstrip contact and sealing. The vehicle should also be road tested to determine the location and degree of windnoise/turbulence on the vehicle.

A primary area of windnoise may be at the rear upper corner of the door glass area and/or the front upper corner of the door glass next to the mirror and filler. Either area may be due to an unsealed run channel and/or run channel retainer to the door frame.

Parts Required: Run Channel Retainer Seal

Buick, P/N 10120492-3 (Right and Left) Oldsmobile, P/N 10120554-5 (Right and Left) Pontiac, P/N 10120490-1 (Right and Left)

Run Channel

Buick/Oldsmobile, P/N 10120598-9 (Right and Left) Pontiac, P/N 10126584-5 (Right and Left)

The recommended repair is to replace the existing retainer seal and to replace the run channel with a new part which has larger seal pads at the corner locations.

Remove:

1. Door trim panel, inner belt seal strip and retainer. 2. Mirror, filler and control cable (if equipped). 3. Outside door handle and cover from door frame. 4. Run channel from door by disengaging door glass. 5. Run channel retainer from door frame.

Install:

1. New foam seal strip on run channel retainer as shown in Figure 1. Install retainer to door frame and locate all attaching holes with a scratch awl.

Note: If noise present at lower ends of garnish moldings, it is advisable to add seal pads at this time (See Figure 3).

2. New run channel to door frame and retainer. Make sure that the front and rear outside flaps are properly positioned over the door frame flanges.

3. Door glass to run channel and cycle door glass to insure proper operation and insertion to the run channel in all areas.

4. Mirror, filler and control cable. Note: If windnoise was present in the mirror/filler area, it is advisable to replace the filler gasket at this time.

Parts Required:

5. Outside door handle and cover.

6. Inner belt seal strip by locating as far forward as possible and pushing downward over the inner panel flange. Reinstall the belt strip retainer.

7. Recycle the door glass to insure proper operation.

8. Reinstall the door trim and road test to insure a satisfactory repair.

ADDITIONAL AREAS OF WINDNOSIE POTENTIAL ARE:

o Outside rear view mirror/filler to door frame. Install new filler gasket.
