TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE DISENGAGEMENT
General Motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Regal model vehicles. A potential interference between the transmission shift cable and the PRNDL bellcrank clip can result in disengagement of the transmission cable from the steering column ball stud. This could allow the transmission to be in a gear other than that displayed by the PRNDL indicator. This condition could cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.
To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, a newly designed bellcrank clip will be installed on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners.
Involved are certain 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix model vehicles produced within the following VIN breakpoints:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
