CAMPAIGN: ROTARY STOP LAMP SWITCH

ROTARY STOP LAMP SWITCH Models: 1988 Regal

TO: ALL GENERAL MOTORS DEALERS

DEFECT INVOLVED:

General motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to Motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1988 Buick Regal Model vehicles. The stop lamp Switches on these vehicles may have a loose electrical contact. The loose Contact can overheat and melt the surrounding plastic causing the contact to stick open. An open contact would render the brake lights inoperative when the brake pedal is depressed. Additionally, the transmission clutch control (TCC) and cruise control (on vehicles equipped with cruise control) contacts would remain closed. This condition would result in a "cruise resume" upon brake pedal release at speeds above 12 miles per hour with the cruise control "on," and TCC engagement until normal drop out speed is reached during deceleration. Either an unexpected "cruise resume" or inoperative brake lights could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.

DEALER ACTION:

To prevent this condition from occurring, the rotary stop lamp switch must be replaced on all involved vehicles.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are certain 1988 Buick Regal Model vehicles produced within the following VIN breakpoints:

Plant From Through ------ -------- ------- Oshawa J1400064 J1410296
