General Motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in a small number of 1988 Buick Regal Model vehicles. When the left front brake hose was assembled to the brake hose bracket, the components may have been twisted. This condition could allow the brake hose to contact the fender lining/rail area. Over time, this contact could allow the brake hose to wear through, causing a loss of brake fluid and a partial loss of braking capability. Part of the brake system will still work and allow the vehicle to be stopped, but over a greater distance. A partial loss of braking capability at a time when minimum stopping distance is required could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.
To prevent this condition from occurring, the left front brake hose will be inspected for proper installation and replaced as required.
Involved are certain 1988 Buick Regal Model vehicles produced within the following VIN breakpoints:
Plant From Through and Including ----- ---- --------------------- Oshawa J1448150 J1457141
All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

1. Inspect front brake hose for a twisted condition. The vehicle must be supported on the wheel/tire assemblies (either on the floor, over a pit, or on a platform type hoist such as used for alignment machines) with front wheels pointing straight ahead.
Visually inspect the left side (driver side) brake hose. If the hose is contacting the fender lining/rail area (see Illustration 1), replace the hose, bracket and retaining clip. See Front Brake Hose Replacement, Pages 5-10 and 5-11 in the 1988 Buick Regal Service Manual.
Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
