REAR WHEEL ABS SPEED SENSOR REPAIR PROCEDURE

SUBJECT: REAR WHEEL ABS SPEED SENSORS (REPLACE REAR WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1989-90 REGAL COUPES WITH ABS BRAKES (OPTION CODE JL9)

CONDITION:

---------- Malfunction of rear wheel ABS Speed Sensor on some 1989-90 Regals. ABS dash light comes on, ABS Diagnostics points to the rear sensor. If the ABS light is on, only the antilock feature is inoperative. The normal brake system is still 100% functional.

CAUSE:

------ The malfunction may be caused by water intrusion past the seal on the ABS Sensor.

CORRECTION:

----------- The ABS Sensor is not serviced separately, replace the rear wheel bearing assemblies with P/N 7466987 bearings.

Part is currently available from GMSPO.

If a vehicle encounters this condition, both rear wheel bearing assemblies should be replaced.

Bearings with an improved seal entered production with VIN 2G4WB14L8L1433441.

IMPORTANT: ---------- When removing the ABS electrical connector, refer to the following illustrations to insure against damaging any part of the connector which uses CPA (Connector Position Assurance) locking pins.
