TURN SIGNAL LEVER WILL NOT STAY IN DETENT POSITION

REVISION: 12/14/94

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO INCLUDE THE 1995 CHEVROLET LUMINA/ MONTE CARLO AND UPDATE PART NUMBER INFORMATION. ARTWORK REMAINS THE SAME. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUBJECT: TURN SIGNAL LEVER WILL NOT STAY IN DETENT POSITION (REROUTE WIRES/REPLACE SWITCH)

MODELS: 1994 BUICK REGAL 1995 CHEVROLET LUMINA/MONTE CARLO 1994 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME 1994 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX

CONDITION:

THE CUSTOMER MAY COMMENT THAT WHEN SIGNALING FOR A RIGHT-HAND TURN, THE LEVER WILL NOT STAY IN THE DETENT POSITION. THERE ARE TWO POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THIS CONDITION:

CAUSE #1:

THE WIRES ON THE WINDSHIELD WASHER/WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE BEEN ROUTED INCORRECTLY WHEN INSTALLED (SEE FIGURE 1). THIS RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF THE SWITCH, PREVENTING IT FROM STAYING IN POSITION.

CAUSE #2:

THE OLD DESIGN WINDSHIELD WASHER/WIPER SWITCH HAS WIRES THAT ARE THICKER THAN THE CRUISE CONTROL WIRES. DURING COLD WEATHER, THE THICKER WIRES MAY BE RIGID ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE TURN SIGNAL FROM HOLDING ITS POSITION. HARNESSES IDENTIFIED WITH "9554 - REV 1" ON THE TAG (SEE FIGURE 3) USE THINNER WIRES. THIS CHANGE WAS IN PRODUCTION AFTER APPROXIMATELY SEPT. 1, 1994.

CORRECTION:

1. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. DISABLE THE SIR SYSTEM, FOLLOWING SERVICE MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS IN SECTION 3F5.

CAUTION:

THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES MUST BE FOLLOWED IN THE ORDER LISTED TO TEMPORARILY DISABLE THE SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR) SYSTEM AND PREVENT FALSE DIAGNOSTIC CODES FROM SETTING. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES COULD RESULT IN POSSIBLE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY, OR OTHERWISE UNNEEDED SIR SYSTEM REPAIRS.

2. REMOVE THE LOWER LEFT TRIM PANEL TO EXPOSE THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN WIRE HARNESS (SEE FIGURE 3). IF THE LABEL HAS "9554 - REV 1", THE WIRES ARE THINNER, AND THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY WILL NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACED. CONTINUE TO STEP 3.

IF THE LABEL SHOWS "REV.009" OR LOWER, OR "0898", REPLACE THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH P/N 26049554. SEE STEP 3 BELOW TO INSURE THAT THE WIRES ON THE SWITCH ARE ROUTED CORRECTLY.

3. DISASSEMBLE THE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COMPONENTS, FOLLOWING SERVICE MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS, TO EXPOSE THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. SEE FIGURES 1 AND 2. MAKE SURE THAT THE WIRES ARE ROUTED AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2, NOT AS IN FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 4 SHOWS THE PROPER WAY TO ROTATE THE SWITCH PRIOR TO INSTALLATION, TO INSURE THAT THE WIRES ARE ROUTED CORRECTLY.

4. VERIFY THAT THE WIRES ARE ROUTED AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2. REASSEMBLE THE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COMPONENTS. REINSTALL THE LOWER LEFT TRIM PANEL. ENABLE THE SIR SYSTEM. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
