LOOSE OR IMPROPER FITTING PASSENGER SUPPLEMENTAL INFLAT

SUBJECT: LOOSE OR IMPROPER FITTING PASSENGER SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR) DOOR ON INSTRUMENT PANEL (ADD NEW RETAINING CLIPS)

MODELS: 1997 BUICK CENTURY, REGAL

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE PASSENGER SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR) DOOR LOCATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL MAY APPEAR TO HAVE AN IMPROPER FIT OR MAY BE LOOSE. THIS MAY BE NOTICED ALONG THE INBOARD EDGE OF THE DOOR TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.

CAUSE:

THE DOOR HAS INSUFFICIENT INTERFERENCE FIT TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SURFACES ALONG THE SIDES.

CORRECTION:

ADD NEW RETAINING CLIPS TO THE DOOR AND FASTEN TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1.

PROCEDURE -

1. REMOVE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TRIM PLATE AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 8C OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. LOCATE NEW CLIP, GM P/N 10408692, TO THE DOOR LOWER SURFACE (SEE FIGURE 1) APPROXIMATELY 95.0 MM (3 3/4 IN.) TO 102. MM (4.0 IN.) FROM THE LEFT CORNER AND GLUE TO DOOR USING #414 TRIM BONDING ADHESIVE, GM P/N 1052621, OR EQUIVALENT.

3. PUSH DOOR DOWNWARD TO THE PROPER POSITION AND MARK THE CLIP ATTACHING SCREW LOCATION.

4. USING A 3.0 MM (1/8 IN.) DRILL BIT, DRILL A HOLE AT THE MARKED LOCATION.

5. INSTALL THE CLIP TO THE SURFACE USING A PAN HEAD SCREW OR A "POP RIVET" OF AN APPROPRIATE SIZE.

6. PRIOR TO REINSTALLING THE TRIM PLATES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO "BLACKEN" THE CLIP EDGES THAT MAY BE VISIBLE BETWEEN THE TRIM PLATE AND DOOR SURFACE BY USING A "MAGIC MARKER", OR EQUIVALENT.
