Test for powertrain control module (PCM) diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls - 3.1L or Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls - 3.8L.

Is the action complete?

  1. Connect a scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  2. Use the scan tool in order to monitor the park brake switch input.
  3. While observing the scan tool, apply and then release the parking brake.

Does the scan tool indicate that the park brake input is active with the parking brake applied?

Go to Step 8

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the scan tool from the DLC.
  3. Disconnect the BCM connector C1.
  4. Release the parking brake.
  5. Use a DMM in order to measure the voltage between the BCM connector C2 terminal A2 and ground.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

Is the voltage equal to the specified value?

B+

Go to Step 9

  1. Leave the DMM connected from previous step.
  2. Disconnect the park brake indicator switch electrical connector.
  3. Measure the voltage again.

Is the voltage within the specified range?

9-14 V

Go to Step 7

Replace the park brake indicator switch.

Did you complete the repair?

Test for and repair a short to ground in circuit 1830.

  1. Replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control System.
  2. Perform the Setup New BCM procedure. Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control System.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Reconnect the connectors and install the components that were removed.
