Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange.
  3. Remove the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange.

  6. Remove the brake drum. Complete the following steps if difficulty is encountered when removing the brake drum:
  7. • Remove the retainer clip
    • Verify that the parking brake is released
    • Back off the parking brake cable adjustment
    • Remove the access hole plug from the backing plate (1)
    • Use a flat bladed tool (2) in order to back off the adjusting screw
    • Reinstall the access hole plug in order to prevent dirt or contamination from entering the drum brake
    • Apply a small amount of penetrating oil around the drum pilot hole

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the brakes drum. Align the marks made during the brake drum removal.
  2. Install the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Apply the brakes approximately Three times in order to seat the pads against the drum.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
