Did you perform the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Apply the park brake.
  3. Shift the gear selector lever to the REVERSE position.

Do the both backup lamps turn on?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Is only one backup lamp inoperative?

Go to Step 8

    • Install a scan tool.
    • Turn ON the ignition , with the engine OFF.
    • With a scan tool, command the backup lamp relay ON.

Do the backup lamps illuminate when commanded by the Body Control Module (BCM)?

Go to Step 5

Insure that the park/neutral position switch is functioning properly. Refer to Diagnostic Starting Point - Automatic Transmission in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E.

Is the park/neutral position switch functioning properly?

Go to Step 12

  1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the backup lamp relay.
  3. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  4. Connect a test lamp to ground and probe the switch side battery positive voltage feed for the backup lamp relay.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

Install a fused jumper across the switch side battery positive voltage feed circuit of the backup lamp relay and the backup lamp supply voltage circuit of the backup lamp relay.

Do the backup lamps turn on?

Go to Step 13

  1. Disconnect the inoperative backup lamp.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the backup lamps supply voltage circuit of the inoperative backup lamp and a ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the ground circuit and supply voltage circuit of the inoperative backup lamp.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Important: Perform the set up procedures for the Body Control Module (BCM). Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Body Control System.

Replace the BCM. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment in Body Control System.

Check the R/CMPT fuse for an open.

Is the R/CMPT fuse open?

  1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp to ground and probe the battery positive voltage feed for the park/neutral position switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the inoperative backup lamp.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the backup lamps supply voltage circuit of the inoperative backup lamp and a good ground.
