Brake Cable Release Tool
Removal Procedure
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Relieve the park brake cable tension at the equalizer.
- Disconnect the front cable from the rear cable that is to be replaced.
• | For the right rear cable,
disconnect the cable (3) from the clip (2). |
• | For the left rear cable, fully remove the equalizer nut from the
equalizer stud, which is part of the left rear cable. |
- Disconnect the retainer (1) that
holds the cable to the support bracket. Use theJ 37043
to release the retainer.
- Disconnect the park brake
cable from the actuator lever.
- Remove cable retaining pin from the support bracket and remove
the park brake cable.
Installation Procedure
- Position the park brake
cable into the support bracket and install the cable retaining pin.
- Install the park brake cable to the actuator lever.
- Connect the retainer (1) that
holds the cable to the support bracket.
- Connect the rear cable to the front cable.
• | For the right rear cable,
connect the cable (3) to the clip (2). |
• | For the left rear cable, install the equalizer stud to the equalizer
nut, which is part of the equalizer assembly. |
- Adjust the park brake. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
.
- Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure

- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to

in General Information.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Relieve the park brake cable tension at the equalizer.
- Disconnect the front cable from the rear cable that is to be replaced.
• | For the right rear cable, disconnect the cable (3) from the clip (2). |
• | For the left rear cable, fully remove the equalizer nut from the equalizer
stud, which is part of the left rear cable. |
- Disconnect the retainer (1) that holds the cable to the support bracket.
Use theJ 37043
to release the
retainer.
- Remove the rear brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brake.
- Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever.
- Remove the rear park brake cable from the backing plate using J 37043
and remove the cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the rear park brake cable into the backing plate.
- Connect the rear park brake cable to the park brake lever.
- Connect the retainer (1) that holds the cable to the support bracket.
- Connect the rear park brake cable to the front cable.
• | For the right rear cable, connect the cable (3) to the clip (2). |
• | For the left rear cable, install the equalizer stud to the equalizer
nut, which is part of the equalizer assembly. |
- Adjust the park brake. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
.
- Install the rear brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brake.
- Install the rear tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
